Statement
I am deeply fascinated by the wild, expansive landscape and the figurative expression of introspection.
My suburban upbringing has made the wild landscapes of Britain both alluring but strangely alien to me. I cherish the open landscape the most, and I love to walk the upland paths alone, content with my own thoughts with only the subtle sounds of the movement of air to accompany me. This is why my landscapes are vast and humanless. My intention is not to render something that’s absolutely clear, but to leave a little ambiguity and allow the viewer to fill in the blanks. The people, like myself, are lost in their own thoughts, unaware of the viewer.
The techniques I use are raw and dynamic. I believe this imparts a tactile and human touch to my pieces. My paintings are textured and built upon successive layers. I employ counterpoint in hue, line and shape. The use of colour, value and composition are paramount in my works, and these have been shaped by my influences and experiences.
I am motivated to transcribe how I see and feel the world around me: both people and land.
